CENORE - Centre of Excellence in Naval Oceanograph

CENORE Welcome

CENORE was established in 2009 as a joint venture between Plymouth University, Britannia Royal Naval College and Flag Officer Sea Training’s Hydrographic and Meteorological Training Group. It provides a focus for Royal Navy personnel seeking advanced academic degrees and offers a platform for the development of research and enterprise activities of mutual interest to the Royal Navy and the University.

The Centre of Excellence is managed by a steering group composed of representatives from the University, the University at BRNC, FOST HM and Navy Command HQ, is formally a research group within the university's Marine Institute and is closely associated with the School of Marine Sciences and Engineering.  CENORE liaises closely with the Marine Environment Information Centre at the UK Hydrographic Office, The Met Office and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratories (DSTL).

CENORE aims to:

  • provide a clear HE point of contact (Plymouth University at BRNC) for all matters relating to operational oceanography, Naval oceanographic research and marine education for the Royal Navy;
  • enhance scholarly activity, research and oceanographic capabilities within the staff at FOST HM;
  • provide a clear point of contact for prospective RN MSc dissertation students, and to facilitate the provision of appropriate academic personnel for supervision of BSc and MSc dissertation students in the Fleet;
  • provide an integrated vehicle through which to identify research areas of importance to the RN and to apply for appropriate funding to support research activities;
  • address Plymouth University’s enterprise agenda through knowledge transfer, increased overseas student registrations, and exploring the potential for engagement with other institutions and funding bodies.

You can view full details of the research projects in the research section of this site.

CENORE is also supporting the Hydrographic Academy, a new initiative set up in conjunction with industrial and academic partners.
